‘We’re going to change the British citizenship test,’ says Prime Minister
The Prime Minister, David Cameron, has confirmed that the citizenship test will be 'overhauled' as part of the ongoing government policy on immigration. For anyone who has studied the for the test recently the announcement will come as something of a relief. As the last update was made in 2007 the number of inaccuracies in the official study materials has been increasingly steadily, creating a very confusing situation for students.
In a speech made to the Institute for Government on 10 October 2011 the Mr Cameron said the following: ‘We’re going to change the British citizenship test.
There’s a whole chapter in the citizenship handbook on British history but incredibly there are no questions on British history on the actual test. Instead, you’ll find questions on the roles and powers of the main institutions of Europe and indeed on the benefits system within the UK, so we’re going to revise the whole test and put British history and culture at the heart of it.’
How long have I got?
It has not been confirmed when the new test will be confirmed or when it will start to be used.
Judging from previous examples of when government policy come into effect it is possible that the new test will start to be used in April 2012. Whenever it is introduced, however, it is almost guaranteed that there will be a transition period in which both tests will be valid.
The Stationery Office, who publish the official study materials for the Home Office, are already requesting feedback on how to improve the study books on their Facebook page. If you have any comments about the official materials then you can send the direct to the UKBA’s publisher there.
