Temporary concessions for Syrian nationals in the UK extendedWith effect from 28 February 2013 the concessions given to Syrian nationals under the Immigration Rules have been extended for a further year until 28 February 2014. This means that Syrian nationals in the UK will continue to have extra ways to extend their stay.
If you are a Syrian national in the UK whose permission to stay in the UK is due to expire, or has expired, in the last 28 days then you can take advantage of extra concessions.
Extending your visa
If you are on a time-limited visa then you can apply to have this extended by the same length of time it was originally granted for. This means that if you were originally given permission to stay in the UK for six months you may be given permission to stay for an extra 6 months, even if ordinarily you would be expected to return home or reapply under a different category.
Switching visa categories
Under the Immigration Rules foreign nationals are normally required to leave the UK to apply to switch to another visa category. The concessions granted mean that Syrian nationals can apply to switch from inside the UK. However, you cannot use this concession to switch into any settlement routes.
Whilst the above concessions apply you must still ensure that you apply within 28 days of your current visa expiring at the latest. You will also have to pay the correct fees for any applications and meet all other requirements for any category you apply under.
If you are expected to provide certain documents but are unable to because of the current conflict in Syria then you must explain why in your application.
The full details of the exceptions, along with guidance on how UKBA staff will consider them in relation to your application can be found in the Staff guidance on the concessions to the Immigration Rules for Syrian nationals on the UKBA website.
