Online applications for Tier 2 and Tier 5 visas launched

From 13 February 2012 migrant workers already in the UK under Tiers 2 and 5 of the points based system can apply, and pay their application fees, online using the UK Border Agency's (UKBA's) 'Apply online' service.

The changes were announced in January but come into effect today. This means applicants, and their dependents seeking further leave to remain, can submit their application and payment and also book appointments at public enquiry offices online.

The online system is not compulsory so it is still possible to submit paper applications using the usual forms.

If you use the online system then your date of application will be taken as the date you submit your application and pay your fee online. You application is then pending until you provide your supporting documentation and biometric information.

If you use the standard service you have 8 days to send your supporting documents and biometric information to the UKBA. If you use the premium service you have 45 days to book and attend an appointment at a public enquiry office to provide your documents and biometric information.

You pay your fee at the point of application so if the charge increases after you apply but before you submit your supporting documentation you pay the old fee.

If you are applying for dependents as part of your main application you can do this in one go. You will be asked during the online process if you are including any dependents in your application. Any dependents making an application after you must create their own customer account and use either Tier 2 or Tier 5 of the online system, as appropriate.

You can find the full announcement from the UKBA - Online applications for Tier 2 and Tier 5 in the UK on the UKBA website.
