ESOL rules change for ‘knowledge of life and language in the UK’ requirement

Changes to the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) rules in settlement applications have been brought into force.

If you are applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and need to take an ESOL course you need to be aware of the changes. In order to meet the ‘knowledge of life and language in the UK’ requirement (KOL):

  • your English language ability must have progressed at least one level
  • you must have attended your ESOL course at an accredited college and get a qualification from an approved awarding body
  • Your course must have included material based on Citizenship Materials for ESOL Learners (ISBN: 1-84478-5424)

Full details of the requirement, along with guidance on how to find accredited colleges, can be found in the ESOL page in our Resources section.

The UKBA changes to the ESOL requirement have been announced on the same day as the UKBA announcement on Tier 1 and Tier 2 changes and changes to the list of migrants who need to take the Life in the UK Test.
